I do remember him replenishing his energy by drinking, unrecognised, in the BBC bar, post or possibly before the show, it being the 1970s and all something would tickle his fancy and the whole bar would fall silent as that laugh rang out – “Aha Ha Ha Ha Ha!” – his genuine laugh. How that guy never got cramp holding Basil aloft for hours like that, I do not know. Basil never broke character even between takes, always looking around, chatting to the camera crew, even when his front pedestal was removed and you could see the arm going up him. Basil’s below-desk puppeteer (spoiler, sorry!) was no mere voiceover artist he was a true actor. I did, however, spend many happy hours in my Dad’s office watching the internal video stream from the studio where Basil Brush shows were being recorded. I remember as a teenager being thrilled to discover that the Monkey voiceovers were done at BBC Pebble Mill in Birmingham, where my father worked, and it turned out we knew the English scriptwriter, David Weir*, not that I recall getting any inside goss about the show. Who could imagine Iron Chef without the dubbing team? The voiceover artists there are great entertainers in their own right (though I don’t believe half the stuff they say comes from the original dialogue).įar further back I have happy memories from my youth of White Horses, Belle & Sebastian and The Flashing Blade, all dubbed from who-knows-what original language, and perhaps most of all, Monkey, so influential a series in its time that it is my firm belief that Pigsy, Sandy and all manner of Monkey magic seeded Buddhist ‘right thought’ and ‘right deed’ deep within a generation of watching Western kiddies. I’ve got nothing against dubbed foreign shows in general, but translating shows in this way is a difficult art.Īt its most excellent, dubbing can truly elevate a show. 9/12/2023 0 Comments Books like invisible citiesWritten for practitioners, travellers, students, and thinkers interested in the city as site and source of performance, The Invisible City mixes travelogue with criticism and cleverly combines philosophical meditations with theatrical pedagogy.ĭownload or read book Continental Feminism Reader written by Ann J. The final part of the book offers useful exercises for artists and travellers interested in researching their own invisible cities. Secondly, Gillette traces the Teatro Potlach group and its ongoing immersive, site-specific performance project Invisible Cities, which has staged performances in dozens of cities across Europe and the Americas. Firstly, it follows in pattern Italo Calvino's novel Invisible Cities, wherein Marco Polo describes cities to the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan, to produce a constellation of vignettes recalling individual cities through travel writing and engagement with artworks. The book explores the city as both stage and content in three parts. Book excerpt: The Invisible City explores urban spaces from the perspective of a traveller, writer, and creator of theatre to illuminate how cities offer travellers and residents theatrical visions while also remaining mostly invisible, beyond the limits of attention. This provides a basis for a re-examination of the relationship between philosophy and politics, which Plato's work advocates, and which it actually enacted.ĭownload or read book The Invisible City written by Kyle Gillette and published by Routledge. Against the background of Plato's critique of the organisation of civic-space in the Greek polis, the author relates the spatial settings in the Plato text to each other. Ophir lies in the way he reconstructs the Republic's different spatial settings - utopian, mythical, dramatic and discursive - using them as the main thread of his interpretation. Plato's act is placed in the context of a politico-discursive crisis in Athens at the end of the fifth and the beginning of the fourth century B.C that gave rise to the dialogue's primary question, that of justice. The author discusses the Republic in terms of discursive events and political acts. Book excerpt: This book offers an original and detailed reading of Plato's Republic, one of the most influential philosophical works in the emergence of Western philosophy. Fifty years on, what can Calvino’s dreamlike text offer to scholars and practitioners interested in actually existing urban life?ĭownload or read book Plato s Invisible Cities written by Adi Ophir and published by Routledge. Each chapter approaches Invisible Cities not only as a novel but as a work of evocative ethnography, place-writing, and urban theory. Drawing from a wide array of disciplinary perspectives and geographical contexts, this volume grapples with the theoretical, pedagogical, and political legacies of Calvino’s work. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Invisible Cities, this collection of essays serves as both an appreciation and a critical engagement. The text is an extended meditation on urban life, and it continues to resonate not only among literary scholars, but among social scientists, architects, and urban planners as well. Book excerpt: In 1972, Italo Calvino published Invisible Cities, a literary book that masterfully combines philosophy and poetry, rigid structure and free play, theoretical insight and glittering prose. Stuart’s adventurous lifestyle and his attitude to sticky situations show that he was a wise mouse. Stuart’s wit and shrewdness get him out of many a pickle like outrunning a starving cat and navigating his way out of a garbage truck, as he tries to survive in a human-dominated world. The book aims to instill the idea in children that it’s often persistence and will that makes a hero, a hero, and not size. The vivid imagination and a high-paced story keep children glued to the book right until the end. White has been a favorite among children for decades and is undeniably one of the most epic books for kids. What comes next for all five children will depend on their behavior.Įpic Book #3 – Stuart Little Ages: 6+ Overview Charlie arrives at the factory and finds out that each of the other winners has an intriguing (albeit questionable) personality trait. Fortunately, Charlie finds a ticket and his family bursts with joy. This is a great opportunity for poor Charlie, who has money to buy only one chocolate bar a year. The grandparents often tell Charlie stories about Willy Wonka’s shadowy chocolate factory where he makes chocolates using his secret recipes and how he strives to never let these recipes become known to other chocolate makers.Ĭharlie is intrigued when he finds out that Wonka is organizing a contest where he will place a golden ticket in five randomly selected chocolate bars, and the ticket-finder will be entitled to a visit to the factory along with one guest and an unlimited supply of sweets for as long as he lives. Although he is financially less fortunate, he is blessed with loving parents and grandparents who are too sick to leave their beds. The story revolves around, as is apparent, Charlie Bucket who is born in poverty. He also induces a belief in natural justice through his stories where characters, both good and bad, ultimately end up with exactly what they deserve. The author ensures that he communicates how unfair a place this world can be through Charlie’s unfortunate poverty-ridden life. Dahl has sprinkled the pages of the book with some wildly spoiled kids and readers love to smirk at their absurd behavior and the consequences they face. This Roald Dahl book weaves the concept of mortality into an amusing tale. Epic Book #2 – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Ages: 6+ Overview Fortunately, the children undo the mess left behind before their mother returns home. Conrad finally takes stock of the situation and says goodbye to the feline and his pals. The goldfish brings sanity to the situation and puts the children on the right track. The cat instantly causes a storm even as the children are still catching up with what has just unfolded. The cat enters in a tastefully clothed attire with a candy-striped hat and a larger-than-life bow tie. Hands down, one of the best entries of any children’s book. Suddenly, the Cat in the Hat makes its appearance. The PremiseĬonrad and Sally, two siblings, sulk as they mop the indoors while outside, the rain pours. Once the boy brings himself up to the task of ordering the joyous feline to pack up their paraphernalia and be on their way, the Cat brims with sadness as his whiskers sink. However, the grumpy goldfish keeps making the mischievous cat’s life harder. The cat zips into a house, stumbles upon possessions, and calls over his equally peculiar friends for assistance in causing wreckage. Seuss) response to an article in the Life magazine titled “Why Johnny Can’t Read.” Theodor relentlessly juggled with a collection of words, fine-tuning it persistently, until he finally managed to articulate this crazy, quirky story that was perfect for children who like to read. This change was a direct response to engines exploding after purging 10 quarts, usually while being driven hard during HPDE’s. This was only partially effective and in February ‘17 the engine line began installing a cartridge-type oil filter to finally resolve the vibration loosening issue. An addendum was added to the GT350 Owners Manual Supplement requiring 60 lbs of torque to prevent loosening. Many early production 17’s and all 16’s had spin-on canister oil filters that would loosen over time from the vibration of the 5.2 FPC engine.
